December 7 - Christmas Concert
December 7 - Christmas Concert
Composed by faculty member Justin Rito
Location: Westminster Presbyterian Church – Grand Rapids, MI
Time: 7 p.m.
Description: At their annual Christmas Concert, the musicians of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids will premiere a new setting of the Magnificat text for two choirs, chamber orchestra, and soprano soloist by composer Justin Rito. This text from the gospel of Luke has been set by composers throughout the Western music tradition including Bach, Vivaldi, and Palestrina, most often as a jubilant celebration of the Christmas season. In setting this prayer spoken by Mary, Rito drew inspiration from its social justice messages, centering the 20-minute work around the words “He has scattered the proud in their conceit, He has cast the mighty from their thrones and He has lifted up the lowly…” From the composer’s program note:
“This prayer haunts me as I consider our modern social justice failures. I was baptized and raised in the Presbyterian Church, and it’s particularly difficult for me to wrap my head around those who claim the Bible as a justification to other, as motivation for ignoring the humanity of marginalized communities, or even as carte blanche to demonize. I wrote this piece as a call back toward the social justice and compassion for others that I believe is at the very core of the New Testament’s message.”

Connect with Us
If you’ve been unable to reconnect with an old college friend, Alma College can forward a note to them on your behalf. If we have a current address or email for your friend, we’ll send them a brief note letting them know you’re trying to reconnect.
Please fill out your information below, then provide as many details as possible about the person you’re hoping to reach.
One of the cool things about the education department is that you’re exposed to special education instruction, which I’ve found is pretty rare for someone like me, who is not a special education teacher. It’s really beneficial! You learn a lot about individualized education programs (IEPs), the law, and other things that have helped me in my career.
One of the great things about Alma is that there’s a lot of face-to-face interactions. You develop real relationships with people who have had interesting careers. That allows you to explore what your own future could look like.
Let's keep in touch.
