ALMA — Alma College will formally inaugurate its 14th president, Dr. Joseph L. Odenwald, during a ceremony on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Presbyterian Hall in the college’s Oscar E. Remick Heritage Center.
Odenwald, who previously served as president of Southwestern Michigan College, began his tenure at Alma College in June, succeeding interim president Eric Blackhurst ’83. Since that time, he has worked closely with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to advance the college’s mission while honoring its longstanding tradition as a residential liberal arts institution.
“From the moment the search committee first met with Dr. Odenwald, his commitment to Alma College’s mission and appreciation for its rich history were clear,” said Board of Trustees Chair Erika Powers Appelt ’91. “In his first year, he has brought a renewed sense of optimism and purpose to campus. We look forward to his continued leadership and to celebrating this important milestone in the life of the college.”
Since arriving at Alma College, Odenwald has spoken publicly about themes of community, vision, tradition and growth — frequently posting updates on social media, conducting interviews on video and meeting with students, alumni and community partners regularly. A team of stakeholders from across campus and beyond is currently working to shape the next iteration of the college’s strategic plan, a process Odenwald has emphasized as central to Alma’s future. The inauguration will take place one day prior to commencement for the college’s Class of 2026.
During Odenwald’s presidency at Southwestern Michigan College beginning in 2020, SMC developed an ambitious strategic framework with goals to develop and sustain purposeful academic programs to support enrollment, increase student retention and success, maintain financial stability, and enhance engagement with alumni as well as its local community of Dowagiac, Mich.
A first-generation college graduate, Odenwald in 2005 earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana College, a private university that enrolls about 1,100 students. He further earned his Master of Science degree from Mississippi College, Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and master’s degree in management, strategy and leadership from Michigan State University.
