Alma College’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences (KHS) is evolving — building on decades of expertise while expanding opportunities for students to engage deeply with human movement, clinical practice, and health sciences.

An evolution in name and focus

The department, formerly known as Integrative Physiology and Health Science (IPHS), has undergone an evolution that reflects both curricular enhancements and the growing expertise of its faculty. From its early days as Exercise Science and Health Management to Exercise and Health Science, the program has consistently adapted to provide a strong foundation in science while meeting students’ career goals.

A key change is the introduction of a new foundational course, Introduction to Kinesiology. This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human movement, integrating physiology, motor behavior, biomechanics, and psychosocial perspectives. It is designed to establish a baseline of knowledge that supports more advanced coursework in the program.

Kinesiology and Health Science for career and graduate school preparation

KHS prepares students for a wide range of career paths and graduate programs. Students gain in-depth knowledge of the musculoskeletal, nervous, and other organ systems, and develop practical skills such as assessing health and fitness data and designing exercise prescriptions—essential tools for health and human performance careers. They also benefit from Alma’s Pre-Health Professions Committee (PHPC), a team of expert faculty and administrators who provide mentorship, application support, and guidance through pre-professional pathways.

Graduates leave the program ready for internships, direct entry-level employment, or advanced degrees in any number of fields; including rehabilitation (PT/OT/AT), medicine (MD/DO/PA) and biomedical research. Alumni have gone on to prestigious graduate schools such as Duke University, the University of Michigan, and Baylor University, and have secured professional roles with organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Henry Ford Health, and the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders

Building the clinical exercise physiology program

Yet another one of the hallmarks of KHS is its emphasis on clinical exercise physiology. This concentration focuses on understanding the effects of exercise on human function in clinical settings, preparing students for roles in cardiac rehabilitation, corporate and personal fitness, and related fields.

The clinical focus complements traditional scientific learning, providing students with practical, hands-on understanding of human movement that enhances both academic and professional preparation.

Looking forward

The newly named Kinesiology and Health Sciences department builds on Alma College’s history of excellence while integrating new faculty expertise, updated curriculum, and a strong focus on clinical application. The program is designed to prepare students for the opportunities of today and the challenges of tomorrow, offering a comprehensive and career-focused education in human movement and health sciences.
