Assistant Professor of Biochemistry

FLSA Employment Category: Salaried; Exempt; Faculty; 9 months

DEPARTMENT: Biology

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Biology is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in the area of synthetic biology to begin in the fall of 2024. A unique responsibility of the position will be to mentor Alma’s growing iGEM team, which was established in 2019. The iGEM team has participated each year in the iGEM Jamboree, earning silver and gold medals, successes which can be attributed to faculty involvement, dedicated students, institutional support for iGEM, and integration of iGEM into the biochemistry curriculum. We hope to continue this record of success. Thus, the ideal candidate will have experience as a participant or mentor of an iGEM team.

All applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in a field related to synthetic biology. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and a course on a topic related to the candidate’s expertise, such as synthetic biology. Teaching first year seminar or another course that contributes to the college’s general education curriculum is also expected. A full-time teaching load is six units per year, which is typically three to four courses with labs. Candidates should be committed to experiential learning for undergraduates, continuing scholarship, and institutional service. Salary, benefits, and support for professional development are competitive.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applicants must submit a C.V., teaching statement, research statement, and three letters of reference to the Alma College Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at provost@alma.edu by January 5, 2024. Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Brian Doyle, Chair of the Biology department at doylebj@alma.edu.
