Get to Know Pre-Physical Therapy

Meet the Pre-Health Professions Committee (PHPC)

As a pre-physical therapy student, you'll be guided by the PHPC, a group of expert faculty and administrators who offer tailored pre-health advising. Meet the committee.

The Alma Venture

Dream it, learn it, do it. Through our Venture program, you can design a unique, hands-on learning experience at home or abroad. Find out more about the Alma Venture.

Explore the Curriculum

Learn more about the fundamental courses that will offer a roadmap for your academic growth and expertise development.

Embrace the power of active learning.

As a pre-physical therapy student, you’ll have access to hands-on opportunities that will set you apart as you prepare for advanced study and work.

You’ll practice dissection in our human anatomy lab and experiment on skeletal muscle cells in our muscle physiology course. Study motor learning and neural control of movement in our neurophysiology class. And you’ll benefit from mentorship, training and application support from the faculty and staff on our pre-health professions committee (PHPC).

Many pre-physical therapy students choose to major in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, integrative physiology and health science, or psychology. However, our specialized curriculum also pairs well with other fields within the humanities, health and social sciences.

What You Need to Know

Physical therapists can work in hospitals, clinics, orthopedics, acute care, wound care, post-operative care and cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation settings.

To practice, you need a doctorate degree from an accredited program. Some of the schools our alumni have chosen are:

  • Central Michigan University (CMU)
  • Duke University
  • San Diego State University
  • University of Michigan – Flint
  • Western Michigan University
  • Northwestern University
  • Washington University – St. Louis

In addition, Alma College has an articulation agreement with CMU. This allows the college to submit the names of two qualified students each year for reserved spots in CMU’s doctor of physical therapy program.
