Pre-Medicine

Improve lives and enhance patient outcomes.

As a pre-med student at Alma, you’ll follow a tailored curriculum designed to prepare you for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and medical school.

Students in our pre-med program typically major in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, integrative physiology and health sciences, or psychology. Whatever discipline you choose, Alma’s broad liberal arts focus helps you develop the flexibility, critical thinking and problem-solving skills you’ll need to handle the evolving demands of the medical field.

You’ll dive into lab and research work from as early as your first year on campus. Our McIntyre Center for Health Science is home to a cadaver laboratory used by students in anatomy and physiology. Here, you’ll get hands-on, supervised experience as you perform human dissection to learn anatomy — an opportunity that is rare at the undergraduate level.

No one describes the Alma experience better than those living it. Explore their stories, in their own words, below.

I’m grateful for my time at Alma, because it’s given me a very well-rounded education, with extra emphasis on anatomy and physiology, while allowing me to make friends and mentors for life.

The Alma Venture

Dream it, learn it, do it. The Alma Venture program means that you — and every single one of your peers — will have the opportunity to design a unique, hands-on learning experience at home or abroad.

Explore the Curriculum

Learn more about the fundamental courses that will offer a roadmap for your academic growth and expertise development.

Develop the scientific foundation you need to pursue graduate study.

At Alma, you’ll receive extensive support to prepare you to apply for medical school. You’ll meet with your faculty advisor every semester to ensure you take the necessary courses. And you’ll be guided by the Pre-Health Professions Committee (PHPC), a dedicated team of faculty and staff advisors.

Your PHPC mentors help you prepare for your MCAT, offer professional workshops and mock interviews, provide letters of evaluation and guide you through your application process.

You’ll also have plenty of ways to participate in research. You can pursue a summer project with funding from the College or engage in a semester, year or multi-year research experience.

You may also present your findings at a professional meeting or conference, where you’ll network with industrial researchers, faculty and graduate students.

What You Need to Know

Thanks to the one-on-one mentorship offered by our experienced faculty and Pre-Health Professions Committee, Alma graduates have gone on to study at some of the most prestigious medical schools in the country.

In addition, Alma participates in an early assurance partnership with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, which provides places for up to two students each year.
