Chemistry

As a chemist, you’ll be in the business of creating solutions.

How do materials interact, combine and change? Chemistry is the study of the composition and transformation of matter at the atomic and molecular level. In our American Chemical Society-certified program, you will:

  • Study the fundamentals of chemistry, including elements, compounds and atomic and molecular structure.
  • Investigate chemical reactions, their underlying mechanisms and how they apply to fields such as medicine, materials science, energy and environmental science.
  • Foster your talent through independent research – as early as your first year.

Student & Alumni Spotlights

No one describes the Alma experience better than those living it. Explore their stories, in their own words, below.

People from the science department, the art department, and the Diversity and Inclusion Office ... they were the people I could talk to at any time. They would make time for me, even if I just needed to talk.

Hypothesize. Test. Innovate. Discover.

As a chemistry student, you’ll have access to our well-equipped laboratories and a wide range of instrumentation.

You’ll cultivate a deep understanding of the field in your courses, which focus on new structural, analytical, synthetic and theoretical techniques applicable in academic and industrial settings.

Through research, you’ll become well-versed in project-specific skills, honing your technical proficiency and improving your written and oral communication.

Many of our students also work in our teaching laboratories as undergraduate assistants. This experience will help you grow as a leader and look great on your resume, too.

What You Need to Know

Chemistry is a practical field with exceptional job prospects. Our graduates work in pharmacy, medicine, the chemical industry and academia — to name just a few possible pathways. Many of our alumni go on to top medical and graduate schools.

Wherever you choose to take your degree, you’ll have a robust skillset that is in high demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for a chemist is $80,670, and the number of jobs in the field is increasing by 14% annually — far outpacing the average growth rate.
