ALMA — Alma College is deepening its connection with the Religious Sisters of Mercy, welcoming them back to campus this fall in an official capacity to support student spiritual growth and community life.

The Sisters of Mercy — a religious institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic church and based in Alma since their foundation in 1973 — have partnered with the college in various ways over the years. Their presence on campus was first envisioned in 2019, but delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. They began serving students last year through Bible studies, prayer gatherings, and community-building efforts, and will continue in this role for the 2025–26 academic year in partnership with Alma College Chaplain Rev. Katrina Pekich-Bundy and Catholic priest Father Paul Werley.

“Connections with the Catholic Diocese have existed for more than a decade, thanks to the work of former chaplains,” Pekich-Bundy said. “The Sisters are such a delight to be around. I always find myself in better spirits after a conversation with them, in which they often make me think critically about spirituality and laugh and find joy in everyday life. I know students will easily connect with them, and I hope students will engage with them as they further seek understanding of their own spirituality.”

Sister Brigid Mary Meeks of the Sisters of Mercy emphasized the importance of this partnership for both the college and the students.

“For the past two years, we have been thrilled to join the college in more intentional service for the comprehensive formation of the human person — mind, body, and soul,” Meeks said. “The Sisters are committed to journeying with Alma College in disposing its students for pursuing the greatness to which each is being called. It is our honor and joy to serve and support the Alma College community in ‘Nomine Dei (in the name of God), Amen,’ as the college seal proclaims.”

The Sisters’ presence reflects Alma College’s commitment to nurturing both academic and spiritual life, helping students explore deeper meaning and purpose during their college years. Read more about spiritual life at Alma College by visiting alma.edu/life-at-alma/spiritual-life.
