POSITION SUMMARY:

The Licensed Counselor provides individual, couple, and group mental health counseling, crisis intervention, and outreach programming to Alma College students. This role plays a key part in promoting student well-being through prevention and education initiatives. This position is an important member of the Wilcox Health Center staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Counseling and Medical Services. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Provide mental health services to undergraduate students including: intakes, assessments, individual therapy, psycho educational programs, and group therapy.
• Offer professional consultation to parents, faculty, staff, and external providers.
• Deliver crisis intervention, case management, and risk assessments for walk-in appointments.
• Coordinate and facilitate educational and prevention trainings on topics such as mental health, suicide prevention, and student success strategies.
• Plan prevention and outreach programs to campus community through events bringing awareness and education to issues such as alcohol and drug use, sexual misconduct, suicide, mental health and stress management.
• Administer the BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) program to judicial, court-mandated, and self-referred students.
• Serve as a liaison to athletics teams and provide NCAA mental health screening to student athletes annually.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and records using the Titanium database system.
•  Perform other administrative related duties as assigned by the AVP of Counseling and Medical Services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in counseling, social work or psychology.
• Licensed in Michigan or license eligible.
• Minimum one-year professional experiences preferably in a college or university setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations including students, faculty, and staff.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Experience with telehealth, short-term/solution-focused counseling, consultation, and outreach.
• Effective therapist with generalist clinical skills who has demonstrated experience assessing and intervening with a broad range of clinical issues from developmental issues typical of college age individuals to debilitating conditions requiring psychiatric hospitalizations.
• Ability to handle complex clinical situations such as suicide assessments/management of crises.
• Maintain a strong commitment to workplace diversity, honesty, integrity, confidentiality, direct communication, teamwork, collaboration, and professional ethics.

• Ability to work cooperatively on interdisciplinary team, to take initiative, and to be flexible in response to developing demands and challenges of the position including after-hours or weekends as needed.
• Proficiency in using technology and ability to work at a computer for extended periods.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, Pell-eligible, and diverse populations.
• Experience in higher education or familiarity with college student development and challenges.
