International Students

We look forward to welcoming you to the Alma College campus for the winter semester, which begins Jan. 11, 2021.

The first day of classes for winter semester will now be Jan. 11, 2021. If this is not the start date reflected on your I-20 form, please contact Amanda Duval, director of human resources, for an updated I-20 form, to reflect this new date, as well as a letter of support for travel to the United States.

Incoming students who cannot secure an F-1 visa at this time, or live in a country with travel restrictions in place due to the pandemic, and cannot be in Alma next month due one of these factors, may complete the winter semester online. Students who complete their coursework in this way can be issued a new I-20, if appropriate. Students should contact Carla Jensen, director of career and personal development, if they will be unable to travel to campus for the winter semester.

Traveling to Campus

International students who are traveling by air from outside the U.S. should arrange to arrive at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) or Capital Region International Airport (LAN) airport on Jan. 3 or 4, in time to take one of these two airport shuttles arranged by Alma College:

• Sunday, Jan. 3, departing DTW at 5 p.m. EST (LAN at 6:30 p.m.)
• Monday, Jan. 4, departing DTW at 2 p.m. EST (LAN at 3:30 p.m.)

Please ensure your flight arrives at least one hour prior to the shuttle departure. Check flight times carefully, as we are unable to arrange individual airport pick up this year and, unfortunately, public transportation from DTW to Alma is unavailable at this time. Contact Carla Jensen with your flight details once you purchase your ticket. If you will spend more than a week at another location in the U.S. prior to traveling to campus, see below.

Students traveling to campus from within the U.S. or arriving by land from Canada should plan to move in on Jan. 9, or in accordance with the move-in instructions they receive from Residence Life. There will also be a shuttle to campus from DTW and LAN on Jan. 9, departing DTW at 5 p.m. Sign up here by Jan. 1 to reserve a spot on the shuttle.

Arrival on Campus

Students arriving on Jan. 3 or 4 will be checked into your residence hall room upon arrival. All students are being tested for COVID-19 as they move in. Students arriving internationally by air will receive COVID-19 tests on Jan. 4 and again on Jan. 8. You will be asked to self-quarantine in your residence hall room until you have received a negative test result from your Jan. 8 test. On-campus quarantine is available if you receive a positive test result. The scheduled airport shuttles as well as room and board during the early arrival and quarantine periods is provided by the college at no additional cost.

Please contact Carla Jensen, director of career and personal development, for more information.
