Donnesha Blake, Ph.D.

Donnesha A. Blake holds a PhD in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned a MA in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland, and a BA in Communication from Central Michigan University. Donnesha is also a Ronald E. McNair Graduate and Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellow. Her research brings together Black feminist thought, fashion studies, digital humanities, and performance studies. Her dissertation entitled, “Stylin’ BlaQueer Feminisms,” examined how Black lesbian and queer women’s fashion activism in digital spaces and cultural productions are deeply interwoven with core tenets of Black feminism such as coalition building, self-definition, and centralizing marginalized communities. Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, she is proud to be back in Michigan to work with the students, faculty, and staff at Alma College. She is thrilled to work with the King Chavez Parks (KCP) 4S Mentoring Program and Campbell Scholars at Alma. As a graduate of GEARUP and the McNair Scholars Program, her goal is to give back to the type of programs that facilitated her growth by working to ensure students’ success through the academic pipeline. Donnesha intends to explore how core tenets of Black feminism such as coalition building, Intersectionality, and the centering of marginal identities can inform diversity education here at Alma.
