This course offers a hands-on experience in the building of a working kiln. Through the introduction of refractory materials, basic design and building techniques, students will assist in the construction of a high firing atmospheric kiln. This course will examine the many innovations of kilns throughout history with particular focus on contemporary kiln design, maintenance, materials and firing methods. Through readings, discussions, travel to representative kilns in other Michigan locations, and experience collaboratively building a kiln, students will have the opportunity to learn basic metal fabrication, and wood shop skills.
