Alma College has joined the Giving Tuesday movement. Alumni and friends are invited to call or make an online gift to the college on Tuesday, Dec. 1, for a two-fold purpose: to strengthen the college’s base of support by encouraging new and increased gifts, and to “unlock” an additional $10,000 milestone gift.
Held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and following the busy shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday has emerged as a national effort for people to celebrate generosity and give to charitable causes.
The focus of Alma’s 24-hour Giving Tuesday campaign is to enhance participation, says Matt vandenBerg, vice president for advancement.
“Giving Tuesday celebrates gratitude and generosity; it is a fitting day to connect with alumni and friends who have benefited so richly from the Alma College experience and to invite them to support the wonderful things that continue to happen here,” says vandenBerg.
Donors now have more ways to express what makes them passionate about Alma College, says vandenBerg.
“For the first time, donors may choose to direct their Annual Fund gifts to address the college’s greatest needs or to enhance their favorite academic departments, athletic teams or performing arts programs,” he says.
Alma College Trustee Dave Devine ’90 has posted a $10,000 challenge gift that will be unlocked when the initiative reaches 100 gifts. Throughout Giving Tuesday, regular updates on progress toward the goal of 100 gifts will be shared on the college’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Donors are encouraged to use the hashtag #PlaidGives to share memories, encourage participation and tell why they support Alma College.
The loyalty and generosity of alumni and friends “makes it possible for current and future generations of Scots to pursue a formative education, to make cherished memories and to build a network of friends for life,” says vandenBerg.
“Giving Tuesday is one more way to connect with what makes you passionate about Alma College,” he says.
