Public Affairs Students Present at American Public Health Asso.

Presentation at American Public Health Association Annual Conference in New Orleans, Nov. 18, 2014 on student leadership in community based environmental-health research.

Lydia Prebeck (’15), Brittney Roggow (’16) and Katherine Vaillancourt (’16) went with Ed Lorenz to present “Community Participation in Environmental Contaminants Research: Promoting Awareness and Encouraging Citizenship.”  The presentation summarized their work with former workers and residents of St. Louis, Michigan, potentially exposed to contaminants from the former Velsicol Chemical plant in St. Louis.  The presentation described how they sought to promote citizen participation in the health assessment and how they mediated between community and expert perspectives.  The presentation was part of a larger forum at the American Public Health Association’s Conference on “Youth and Community Leading the Way to Healthier Communities.
