Costume Shop Supervisor/Costume Designer

The Alma College Department of Theatre and Dance has an opening for a Costume Shop Supervisor/Costume Designer. This is a full-time, 9-month position. Duties will begin in August of 2022. We are a small department, and all wear many hats. We are seeking a collaborative and adaptable colleague who can manage our costume shop and support an active production schedule. The ideal candidate will be able to teach costume design and/or construction on occasion.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, coordinate, and/or construct costumes for three Alma College Theatre and two Alma College Dance productions per academic year;
  • Maintain and repair Alma College Theatre and Dance costume inventory;
  • Supervise undergraduate student workers;
  • Maintain a stocked, safe working environment, ordering all consumables and materials;
  • Participate in fittings as needed;
  • Attend all production meetings, tech/dress rehearsals as needed;
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsal during production week.

Qualifications

  • MFA in Costume Design strongly preferred. We will consider candidates with a BA/BFA in Theatre with an emphasis in costume design;
  • Some experience in teaching costume design or construction is highly desirable;
  • Capacity to lead and constructively mentor student workers and practicum students, some of whom are new to costuming;
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with theatre and dance faculty and students to support a small, but thriving department.
