Alma mayor and long-time businessman Greg Mapes is the 2019 recipient of the Alma College Community Service Award, given annually to an individual whose contributions enhance and positively affect the overall quality of Alma College and the Alma community.
“Greg Mapes has been a business owner, executive and civic leader within our community for nearly 40 years,” says Jeff Abernathy, Alma College president. “Throughout those years, he and his family have established a legacy of service, philanthropy and leadership.
“In addition to being a pivotal business and economic leader, especially in the downtown Alma business district, Greg has demonstrated his commitment to our community through service and philanthropy,” says Abernathy. “I am deeply grateful for his dedication to our community.”
During his career, Mapes has held positions as an investment officer at Firstbank Corporation and a vice president at Isabella Bank. He also has served on the Alma City Commission for 15 years and on the executive board of Greater Gratiot Development for nearly 10 years. He is the past president of the Masonic Pathways board of trustees and a previous board member for Habitat of Gratiot County.
“In addition to his service, Greg and his wife Lee have a history of generous philanthropic support for numerous organizations, agencies, foundations and projects,” says Abernathy. “Their ongoing generosity to organizations like the United Way of Gratiot County, Michigan Masonic Home Foundation and Alma College has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of individuals.”
