Work on the major renovations to Mitchell and Newberry halls began immediately following spring commencement in April. The college has contracted with Granger Construction to complete this project, with aggressive timelines for completing the work in time for the return of students in August. At the four-week mark, the project is slightly ahead of schedule.
The demolition and abatement of the buildings are complete. If you were to tour
the work site, you would see gutted interiors, the necessary first step before actual renovation work can proceed. All the furniture, light and bathroom fixtures have been removed, down to the base concrete floors.
The installation of new drywall has started on the third floors and will proceed from the top floors to the ground-level. Next steps will be the framing of the new bathrooms, running power and utilities to the buildings, and completing the drywall installation.
Safety remains an important part of the project. The Granger project team performs weekly safety audits and conducts daily safety huddles with the trades. About two-thirds of the contractors involved with the project are located within 50 miles from Alma.
