Elementary Education Majors, Libbey Jones ’18 and Kapre Filhart ’18, presented at the Michigan Academy Conference on March 9, 2018. Dr. Jessie Store accompanied the students to the conference.
Libbey Jones’ presentation at Michigan Academy was titled, “Developing and Sustaining Interest in STEM.” About Libbey’s work, Dr. Store stated, “It’s easy to think that with the enduring buzz about STEM we have made enough progress. Unfortunately, as Libbey’s research reveals, there is still so much work to do to develop and sustain student interests. Libbey followed her passion in Math and Science for us to learn from students and teachers how to overcome the challenges and get students excited about STEM as our future depends on it.”
Kapre Filhart’s presentation was “Technology Integration in K-8 Classrooms.” Dr. Store advised Kapre in her research. She provided the following insight about Kapre’s work, “Technology integration without digital wisdom does get in the way of student learning. When done thoughtfully, technology is an amazing tool to transform pedagogy and student learning. Kapre’s outstanding research is timely and urges all education stakeholders to rethink how they invest in students, teachers, and technology.”
