Great Scot: Janie Diels

“She is student-focused and always available in helping students achieve their academic goals.” - Jeff Abernathy

Alma College faculty member Janie Diels is known as a strong advocate for students and an engaged member of multiple campus committees. She has been identified as this month’s “Great Scot.”

Diels was recognized in part because of her leadership as chair of the provost search committee but also her service to campus broadly.

“She has been tireless in her involvement with the Foundations of Excellence process and putting structure and support around academic advising,” wrote President Jeff Abernathy in his monthly campus update. “She is student-focused and always available in helping students achieve their academic goals. Her student success efforts are noticed and much appreciated.”

Diels serves on the retention and institutional assessment committees, is an elected member of the Policy and Planning Council, and advises student media organizations. The associate professor of communication and new media studies joined the Alma faculty in 2006.

President Abernathy periodically presents the Great Scot Award to members of the faculty and staff for “excellence in service to Alma College.”
