New Members Inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

Nation’s oldest academic honor society has new members.

Five Alma College students - four seniors and one junior - have been selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, America’s oldest and most prestigious scholastic honorary society. Also recognized were two students who were inducted in 2015 as juniors. New members were announced April 22 at Alma’s 2016 Senior Dinner.

Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes excellence in liberal education, stressing intellectual discipline and achievement. Members are selected on the basis of their outstanding academic achievement in the traditional arts, sciences and humanities.

Eligibility requires at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) for a junior and a 3.50 GPA for a senior. Among other requirements are proficiency in college mathematics and a foreign language.

Alma College’s chapter, founded in 1979, is one of 283 in the United States and one of eight in Michigan.

The following students were inducted:

Jacob Blazejewski of Bay City, MI, is a 2012 graduate of Valley Lutheran High School. Inducted as a junior in 2015, he is the son of Kevin and Patti Blazejewski of Bay City, MI.

Jacob Judd of Fowlerville, MI, is a 2012 graduate of Fowlerville High School. He is the son of Theodore and JoAnne Judd of Fowlerville, MI.

Samantha Kulhanek of Shelby Township, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Eisenhower High School. She is the daughter of Donald and Terri Kulhanek of Shelby Township, MI.

Heidi Michael of Oak Park, MI, is a 2013 graduate of International Academy. She is the daughter of Gordon and Christine Michael of Oak Park, MI.

Marianna Smith of Ludington, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Ludington High School. She is the daughter of Gerald and Diane Smith of Ludington, MI.

Hannah Jeffery of Highland, MI, is a 2014 graduate of International Academy West. Inducted as a junior in 2016, she is the daughter of Ray and Jeanne Jeffery of Highland, MI.

Katherine Vaillancourt of Hillsdale, MI, is a 2012 graduate of Hillsdale Academy. Inducted as a junior in 2015, she is the daughter of James and Jeannie Vaillancourt of Hillsdale, MI.
