Location: Clack Art Center, Clack Theatre

Reflect on the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. by performing your original poetry or someone else’s work at our spoken word poetry night revolving around activism, resistance, oppression, liberation, revolution, and justice.

Join us as we reflect on the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King by performing your original poetry or someone else’s work at our spoken word poetry night. Your poems can reflect on the themes revolving around activism, resistance, oppression, liberation, revolution, and justice or what MLK means to you. All levels of skill and experience are welcome. Memorization of the poem is not required. There will be an open mic portion at the end for anyone who wants to perform (no sign-up required).

Please fill out the form so we can begin to gauge interest and plan.

The Hilson Poetry Slam is dedicated to our Alma Alumni Calvin Hilson who tragically passed away in March 2016. Hilson was on the football team at Alma, and he was a proud mentor to Black/African American students on campus. After Hilson graduated, he became a pastor. Hilson always had a love of poetry, and started the tradition of an MLK poetry slam in 2006. Please help us continue to celebrate his legacy.

Registration for this event is now closed.
