2020-2021 Book Read Series

Dr. Chih-Ping ChenHost: Dr. Chih-Ping Chen, associate professor of English

Dr. Chen’s book selection for April is Through the Arc of the Rain Forest by KarenTei Yamshita.

The group will meet three Wednesdays in May - May 5, 12 and 19 at 8:00 p.m. (EST).

Dr. Chen offers this insight on why she selected this title for the series:

“In Karen Tei Yamashita’s magical realism novel, Through the Arc of the Rain Forest, a Japanese immigrant with a magic ball arrives in the Brazilian Amazon, and his adventures become entangled with the fates of both local residents and American businesses that unravel the secrets of the rain forest. This soap-opera comedy satirizes commodification of faith and happiness; in addition, it invites us to ponder on what will be left of Nature in the success of globalization.”
