Dr. Vivian shared these thoughts about his choice of reads for this month:
“Clarice Lispector is a mystical, magical writer whose primary province of residence is the unfathomable mystery of the human heart; her fiction is not driven by narrative or plot (though these to an extent do exist) but being itself. Here’s a passage from her first novel Near To The Wild Heart that approximates what I assert above: “She wanted even more: to be reborn always, to sever everything that she had learned, that she had seen, and inaugurate herself in new terrain where every tiny act had a meaning, where the air was breathed as if for the first time” (72). Thus it is that we as readers are inaugurated into a deeper awareness of the human potential to be, and such is the singular and miraculous ability of her staggering prose. Born in Ukraine to Jewish parents, tragedy took the Lispector family to Brazil where she grew up to write in a kind of Portuguese that native Brazilians to this day find baffling, astonishing, and utterly singular. She is a rare gift to world literature.”
