Library Renovation: What’s to come
The library-to-learning commons renovation project is underway! All of the books are now moved and the library offices are in Tyler-Van Dusen.
The new learning commons will retain some elements of the library and add new space, like a café and lounge space. The goal is to create a campus commons for all kinds of learning. The current space will be transformed in the following ways:
The library books and library staff will all be on the top floor, along with quiet study space.By moving offices upstairs, the librarians will be better able to work with students and manage the collection.
The second, or main floor, will have space for a media lab and an IT help desk. The Writing Center and Academic Support from the CSO will also be a part of this space. The Andison Center and the new Center for College and Community Engagement (3CE) will also have offices and use space on this floor for events. There will be lots of study and lounge space available, although not as quiet as the top floor. The biggest change will be a back door, opening toward Superior Street.
The first floor will also see many changes and the biggest will be the café. The café will be located on the SAC side of the building, opening onto the Mac Mall. The College Archives and Library Special Collections will take up part of this floor, along with student organization offices. All of the remaining space will be lounge and relaxation area.
The oldest part of the building, the Stacks, will be demolished.The Stacks were built in the early 1920s and served the college well over the years.This part of the building, however, presented an increasing number of problems.
