Located in the city of Alma, a community of 10,000, Alma College features a walkable campus with historic and contemporary buildings. The campus is a block from downtown Alma and within two hours of Michigan beaches and ski areas. Gratiot and adjacent counties feature plentiful parks, outdoor recreation opportunities, golf courses and shops.

Alma: Scotland USA

Scottish pride thrives in Alma, known affectionately as Scotland USA. Alma College serves as a community partner and the host to the annual Highland Festival, featuring traditional Scottish games, music and revelry during Memorial Day weekend. The festival, one of the largest games in North America, attracts more than 250 bagpipers, world champion highland dancers and world record-holding highland athletes.

Celebrating Community

Each fall, Alma College hosts a Community Appreciation Day that includes the awarding of the Alma College Community Service Award in recognition of an outstanding commitment to both Alma College and the greater Alma community.

The Arts and Athletics

Cultural and sports events are offered throughout the year, and admission is often free or very reasonably priced. Summer activities bring large numbers of out-of-town visitors to campus as well. In addition to the college’s excellent fine arts programs, Alma’s Division III athletics program offers intercollegiate competition in 23 varsity sports.

Weddings

 

Alma’s Dunning Memorial Chapel is a beautiful location for weddings. Reservations are generally required 12 months in advance of a planned event.

Summer Camps

Alma College hosts a variety of summer activities, including sports, cheer, music and leadership camps.

Get Active, and Get Fit!

The Alan J. Stone Center for Recreation and the McClure Natatorium offer wellness education, swimming instruction and recreational opportunities to community members and local businesses. The campus is bordered by the 41-mile Fred Meijer Heartland Bike Trail.

A Culture of Service

Hundreds of Alma College students participate in community service, internships and service learning. College faculty and students actively conduct research in the local community—one example includes faculty who are leading experts in environmental policy who work with students to clean up the Pine River and impact local and national regulation of Superfund sites.
