Biography

The Alma College Choirs have been the primary focus of Dr. Will Nichols’ professional life since 1983. Serving the College as the Secrest Professor of Music, Dr. Nichols conducts the Alma Choir and the College Chorale and provides musical leadership to the Alma A Cappella. In addition, he teaches conducting in the music education curriculum and teaches voice. Many of the Alma Choir traditions — such as the Festival of Carols, Masterworks concerts with the ASO and annual recording projects — were begun through Dr. Nichols’s leadership.

As a baritone soloist, Will has sung with virtually every major symphony orchestra and oratorio society in Michigan and has performed in Germany, Poland and Spain with Maestro Helmuth Rilling. For 22 summers, Will was a member of the professional chorus of the Oregon Bach Festival. He is a past president of the American Choral Directors Association of Michigan and a past Director and Dean of the Bay View Music Festival and Summer Conservatory in northern Michigan. Will and his wife Pamela have four grown children and four grandchildren.

In his own words, “The Alma College Choirs have become my life’s work, and the students who make up the Alma Choirs are the reason I wake up every morning thinking about the singing we have to look forward to today!”
