Pathways to a Chemistry Major

Our program’s quality and completeness is certified by the American Chemical Society for the training of professional chemists.

Here’s what ACS-certification can do for you. The following schedules are intended to give a representative idea of a plan of study. The actual timing of this course work would depend on each individual’s plan and needs and should be discussed with an academic advisor. For course descriptions see our Requirements & Courses page.

Common Pathway to a Chemistry Major with an emphasis on Pre-Medicine

Rather than recommend specific course work, the Association of American Medical Colleges recommends students focus on specific competencies in preparation for modern MCAT exams. The four-year plan shown below combines a chemistry major with the pre-medical coursework recommendations from the pre-health professions committee (PHPC) that should best prepare students to take the MCAT exam after their third year.

There is a lot of overlap between the major and the PHPC recommendations, thus pursuing a chemistry major represents a highly efficient means by which to prepare for medical school.  For more information on the PHPC recommended coursework, see the PDF document on the right.  The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) website provides a detailed and comprehensive look at the MCAT.
