Counseling Services

Individual Counseling: Through the normal growth process, individuals often experience concerns about themselves or their relationships with others. The CWC staff is trained to assist with a wide range of personal concerns. Students come to the CWC in search of a better understanding of themselves--their values, attitudes and feelings. Others are concerned with their relationships with peers, family, roommates or members of the opposites sex. Some students use our staff and resources to help clarify, change or become more comfortable with aspects of themselves. Students may also arrange for medical and psychiatric consultation through the Gratiot County Community Mental Health Center.

Group Counseling: The CWC routinely offers counseling groups designed to meet students' diverse needs. Group counseling offers a broad range of insight and support from peers and professional counselors. Some groups deal with general concerns; others focus on such specific topics as assertiveness, eating problems, friendship building and stress management.

Couples Counseling: Couples counseling helps alleviate dating concerns and the strains often involved with maintaining a close relationship. Premarital counseling is also available.

Outreach Programs: The CWC is committed to promoting issues related to student life and is willing to consult or assist with presentations or workshops to enhance the student experience.

Sports Counseling: Assistance is provided to student athletes with personal growth and athletic performance through the development of positive communication skills, appropriate goal setting, stress and time management.

Consultation: Counselors are available to consult with students, faculty and staff. Consultations may focus on personal issues, long-range planning and decision-making skills.

Appointments: Located in the North end of the Wilcox Medical Center (entrance facing the football field), the Counseling and Wellness Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. , with a break between 12 and 1 for lunch. While faculty and staff members occasionally recommend the CWC to students, no referral is necessary. The services of the CWC are available to all Alma College students without charge. Appointments can be made by calling Ext. 7225 or by visiting the CWC in person.

Referrals: The CWC staff is knowledgeable about other services both on and off campus and is often able to help individuals find the most appropriate source of help and facilitate the referral process. You are invited to utilize the CWC for as many of these services as you may need.

Confidentiality: The Counseling and Wellness Center staff regards all inquiries and discussions as private and confidential. Information is released only upon the written consent of the student or as may be required by law.

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
