Counseling Services at Alma College
Our goal at the CWC is to support and encourage students as they work to resolve problem areas as they cope with difficult situations. We counsel students dealing with a variety of issues, including:
- Adjustment to college
- Depression
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Uncertainty about the future
- Relationship issues
- Substance use and abuse concerns
- Roommate concerns
- Issues involving friends and family members
- Or simply to get information for a class presentation or an essay
For students who are just missing home, we also have special visitors in the office. Our two dogs, Sparky and Emma, come to the office on a rotating basis. Cats Jynx and Moxie show up on the days the dogs aren't there to bother them. Students are welcome to drop by the office just to play with whatever animal happens to be there that day.
How It Works
Student can call 7225 to set up a counseling appointment, though we do accept walk-in emergency appointments. These appointments are FREE of charge to all registered Alma students.
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The counselor will listen to the student-client, attempt to understand personal perspectives, and be helpful to the fullest extent of his or her professional training.
As our client, it is your responsibility to help the counselor learn about your life situation, thoughts, and feelings, and to have the courage to try to master identified problem areas.
We consider all inquiries and discussions as private and confidential. Information is released only upon the written consent of the student or as may be required by law. Please be advised that if you'd like to contact the Counseling staff, and to ensure your privacy, using electronic communication is not a secure medium. Additional Information
The Counseling and Wellness Center subscribes to an interactive newsletter, Student Health 101, which provides information about a variety of topics from stress to substance abuse.
Our website also includes information and links to self-tests on depression, anxiety and nutrition and other self-awareness inventories. One especially useful test to take is the Mystudentbody.com an interactive web-based test that gives you practical feedback on your alcohol use.
You can take them privately and, if you have any concerns about the results, give us a call and speak to a counselor.
