Counseling and Wellness Center

Counseling Services at Alma College

Our goal at the CWC is to support and encourage students as they work to resolve problem areas as they cope with difficult situations. We counsel students dealing with a variety of issues, including:

Wellness dog

  • Adjustment to college
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Uncertainty about the future
  • Relationship issues
  • Substance use and abuse concerns
  • Roommate concerns
  • Issues involving friends and family members
  • Or simply to get information for a class presentation or an essay

For students who are just missing home, we also have two special residents in the office. Our two cats, Tully and Harley, live in our office.  We also have two dogs, Teddy and Emma, that occasionally visit. Students are welcome to drop by the office just to play with the cats, or whatever other animal happens to be there that day.

How It Works

Students can call 989/463-7225 to set up a counseling appointment, though we do accept walk-in emergency appointments. These appointments are FREE of charge to all registered Alma students.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The counselor will listen to the student-client, attempt to understand personal perspectives, and be helpful to the fullest extent of his or her professional training.

Sobriety test

As our client, it is your responsibility to help the counselor learn about your life situation, thoughts, and feelings, and to have the courage to try to master identified problem areas.

We consider all inquiries and discussions as private and confidential. Information is released only upon the written consent of the student or as may be required by law. Please be advised that if you'd like to contact the Counseling staff, and to ensure your privacy, using electronic communication is not a secure medium. Additional Information

Our website also includes information and links to self-test on alcohol, depression, nutrition and other self-awareness inventories. Two especially useful tests to take include the e-Chug an interactive web-based test that gives you practical feedback on your alcohol use, and CollegeResponse offering screening for students mental health.

You can take them privately and, if you have any concerns about the results, give us a call and speak to a counselor.

Alma College ranks second in the nation in the percentage of students who participate in alternative break service trips, according to Break Away, the national organization that supports the development of alternative break experiences that inspire lifelong active citizenship. Last year, Alma students provided flood relief, built affordable homes, planned activities for terminally ill children, constructed wheelchair ramps, worked with immigrants, and assisted in after-school programs.
