Stone Pond - Alma College's Ice Skating Rink

Welcome to The Stone Pond Homepage!

Here you will find all you need to know about the Ice Rink on Alma College's Campus.

Ice Rink Is Currently: Taken Down For The Year.

The Stone Pond is located North of the Stone Recreation Center. It is open to anyone and there is lighting to accomodate night skating. The lighting can be plugged into the backwall of the Stone Recreation Center.

NOTE: If the Ice is soft, DO NOT risk skating on it. If you fall through with skates you will rip the liner, and the rip will cause the rink to drain all of the water and there will be no more rink.

Students: Skates and hockey equipment can be checked out at the front desk of the Stone Recreation Center. This equipment was made available by a generous donation by alumni Doug Gross. You will need to exchange both your college ID and your shoes to sign out the skates and equipment. If equipment is not returned, there will be charges filed unless the equipment is returned.

Note: Equipment is only available to current Alma College students, Current Faculty or Staff, or Alumni.

History:

The Stone Pond was first built in January of 2006 by Ryan Hampton, Jacob Acton, and Lucas Locke. The rink is 90' x 50'. It was built by creating a wooden fence approximately 2 feet high and lining it with 3 pieces of 100' x 20' construction plastic. The pieces of liner are held together by spray adhesive and duct tape. The rink was then filled with water. It is maintained by flooding it and continuing to build up the ice. The idea came from an alumni, Doug Gross, who donated money to purchase equipment that could be used on the rink. It serves all students and community members who would like to visit. It is open 24/7 as long as the ice is strong and the weather is cold!

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
