Welcome to Getting Started: A Newsletter for Parents of First-year Alma College Students

Nick Piccolo
Vice President for Student Life

Greetings on behalf of the Alma College community.

This is the third edition of a newsletter designed specifically for parents of first-year Alma College students. When we discussed names for the publication, The Cupcake sprang to mind. I kept thinking about the times when, before bedtime my son would fish out a battered copy of the school newsletter from a place no human would look, and I learned that I was responsible for bringing three dozen cupcakes to school the next day. It was needed information, but a little too late and very stressful.

In this issue you will find commentary from Counseling and Wellness, our Student Congress President, Financial Aid, and the Parent Board. We gathered thoughts from our students and professional staff about their first-time-at-school experiences and asked them to pass along their wisdom. It is our desire that as you read this newsletter you will gather some useful nuggets that give you insights or reassurance about your student’s first-year experience at Alma College. We trust it is not under the bed and battered, but in time and enjoyable. Better still, there is no baking required.

Finally, please accept our welcome to the Alma College family and best wishes for a successful school year.

More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region's premiere performing arts facility.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
