Part I: Relationship Statement

Part 1: Relationship Statement

The relationship between Alma College and the Greek system has and continues to affirm the presence of the Greek System as a positive influence in the College community. It is expected that the Greek System will assume an active leadership role in achieving the overall goals of Alma College as stated in its Mission statement. These goals are to seek the liberation of people from ignorance, prejudice, and parochialism; to preserve and perpetuate the knowledge, skills and values appropriate for free men and women; and to prepare students for useful vocations in a changing society.

Alma College has recognized that Greek organizations hold a unique and special place in campus life by providing small housing and the allocation of staff time and resources for the maintenance and strengthening of these organizations. In turn, the college expects the Greek system to continue to support the Mission of Alma College. Specifically, the following seven areas are those which are appropriate for Greek chapters to address in order that the entire Campus Community may strive to become a College of Distinction.

1. Scholarship: Members of the Greek organizations are expected to be actively involved and to take leadership roles in the educational community. Such involvement should range from attendance and active participation in classes to participation educationally- oriented co-curricular programs in membership honor societies.

2. Societal Awareness: All members of the the Alma College Community, including Greek organizations, should show concern for issues of human dignity and global appreciation.

3. Individual Development: Self-awareness, individual growth, and development of leadership capabilities should be the goals of all chapters and participants in the Greek system.

4. Volunteerism and Service: As members of the campus community and residents in the larger Alma community, members of Greek organizations are expected to participate and to take leadership roles in campus and community service programs and activities.

5. Risk Management: Members of the Greek organizations are expected to serve as role models for other students in the educational community.

6. Chapter of Development: As functioning agents on the College Campus and in the greater community it is crucial to establish and maintain high standards of operations for all chapters. Without continued development the chapters Greek heritage will not maintain a strong foundation to support them in the future.

7. College Citizenship: In addition to promoting each of the above areas within each chapter, the Greeks should promote and participate in those efforts on the part of other campus organizations/offices to achieve these same goals. Each chapter should show a commitment to the democratic structure of governance of Alma College through the manner in which its own chapter is run and by encouraging its members to actively participate in campus governance structures.

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
