Counseling Services Information

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

The role of Counseling Services at The Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) is to positively impact academic decision-making and persistence by facilitating student learning about their emotional and psychological development. CWC staff works to help students resolve problems that interfere with personal, social, and academic functioning while also emphasizing prevention, development, adjustment, and wellness.

The professional staff at the CWC provides short-term mental health services free of charge to all registered students. We also offer referral, crisis, and outreach programming services as well as a resource library, self-help materials and videos that are available without seeing a counselor.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Our goal at The Counseling and Wellness Center is to provide a safe environment for students as they explore their thoughts, feelings, and resolve problems. Therefore, all consultation and counseling services are confidential. This means that CWC staff does not reveal the identity of students who seek services, will not confirm or deny participation in services, and will not discuss the details of therapy sessions with anyone outside of the counseling center without the student's knowledge and/or written consent. All records remain confidential and information about participation in counseling does not appear on a student's academic record.

There may be instances where we will give a student the option of granting us consent to contact his/her referral source This may be a case where the student was referred to the CWC by faculty, staff, parent, or administrator. If written permission is given, we may contact the referring individual indicating that the student attended an initial appointment. If the student has not granted this permission, no information will be shared.

Students may request to sign a written release granting us permission to share confidential counseling information with the person(s) of their choice, including faculty, staff, parents, and other clinicians. This release form is available at The Counseling and Wellness Center.

Parents and concerned others may consult with The Counseling and Wellness Center staff if they believe a student is in distress and they are uncertain how to help. If you have concerns about your student's emotional health or behavior, including alcohol use, depression or anxiety, aggression, unusual behavior, or overall psychological well-being, we encourage you to contact us at (989) 463-7225.

Students at Alma College can get involved in any of nearly 100 campus organizations, including fraternities and sororities, student government, academic honorary societies, campus media, intramural sports, the performing arts and worship groups.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
