Religious Leadership Award Application

Religious Leadership Award

Deadline: March 1

High school seniors and incoming transfer students are invited to apply for the Alma College Religious Leadership award, a scholarship based on your history of religious involvement and leadership in any faith.

The Alma College Religious Leadership Award is a $1,000 scholarship offered to five incoming students per year. The award is renewable for up to four years, contingent upon satisfying the requirements listed below.

Religious Leadership Award Renewal Requirements

  1. Planned, progressive involvement and leadership in religious life

Each year, Religious Leadership Award recipients will meet with the Chaplain at the beginning of the year to develop a written, personalized plan of engagement and leadership. During the course of the four years at Alma, award recipients will be expected to increase their leadership responsibilities related to religious life on campus. For example, a student may begin by participating in a scripture study then progress to leading the study; or begin by participating in a faith-based alternative break trip then progress to leading a trip. At the conclusion of each year, award recipients will submit a short written reflection on their experience in religious leadership for the year.

  2. One Religious Studies course

By the end of the sophomore year, award recipients are to successfully complete any one Religious Studies class at Alma College.

  3. Leadership development training

During the course of the academic year, award recipients will meet with their peers and the Chaplain for leadership development training. By senior year, students will be expected to help facilitate this training with the Chaplain.

  4. Satisfactory academic progress

In addition to the above expectations, renewal of the Religious Leadership Award - like other Alma College scholarships - is also dependent on satisfactory academic progress.

Note: Currently, most religious life opportunities at Alma College are related to the Christian religion. The Chaplain is open to working with students of all faith traditions and will facilitate leadership opportunities appropriate to each individual.

To apply for the Religious Leadership Award, please complete the following steps:

  1. Apply to Alma College
  2. Complete the Religious Leadership Award application.
  3. Ask a leader in your faith community (ex: pastor, youth group leader, etc.) for a recommendation. The form must be postmarked by February 15.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."
