Student Life

At Alma, there’s no excuse not to get involved. From social Greek organizations and special interest groups to intramural athletic teams and theatre productions, there truly is a student organization for everyone at Alma. When you aren’t hitting the books, you can be engaged in the activities you enjoy and are most passionate about.

A student organization exists for almost every interest at Alma, and the list is always growing!

  • Twenty-two Academic Honor Societies showcase Alma’s best and brightest.

  • Alma offers 10 social Greek organizations, plus the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils.

  • Opportunities for Christian fellowship and worship include the Catholic Student Organization, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, New Life Campus Ministry, and Student-led Bible studies and small groups.

  • Campus media organizations include the Almanian, the student newspaper; student radio station WQAC, FM 90.9; the Pine River Anthology; and The Scot yearbook.

  • Student government organizations include Student Congress, Alma College Democrats, Alma College Republicans, Alma College Union Board (ACUB) and several residence hall councils.

  • Performing arts organizations exist for students interested in theatre, music and dance.

  • Opportunities for intramural sports participation exist in basketball, flag football, indoor soccer, dodgeball, sand volleyball, ultimate Frisbee and more.

  • There’s nearly 100 campus organizations in all. Some focus on personal interests such as chess, climbing, fencing, lacrosse and scrabble. Others are service-orients, such as Habitat for Humanity, Alma Leadership Alliance, Amnesty International, Students in Free Enterprise, and Students for Peace and Nonviolence. Constituency groups include the Black Student Union, PRIDE and the Women’s Issues Advisory Board.

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.

Spring Term 2009
Title: Never Forget Your Dreams: The Creation of Crazy Horse Memorial

Joanne Gilbert, professor of communication, took students to the Black Hills of South Dakota during Spring Term 2009 to perform the play she wrote titled Never Forget Your Dream: The Creation of Crazy Horse Memorial. The students put on five performances on campus, at the Red Cloud Indian School and at the memorial relating the history of the memorial.
