C. To the Professions

* Continued to redefine the Math, Science Technology Day (MSTD) making it into a much more dynamic and effective recruiting tool while showing high school students the wonderful things they can be involved in if they major in the sciences at Alma College. MSTD had the biggest turn out in years.

* Jointly, with Dr. McNally, designed, implemented and expanded the Annual Alma College Robotics Challenge. Successfully hosted the competition between 18 high school student teams from 9 schools as part of the Honors day activities. All had a great time and plan to participate again.

 

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation. Alma offers 22 varsity sports—11 for the women and 11 for the men—including four sports that debuted in 2011–12: women’s lacrosse and bowling and men’s lacrosse and wrestling.

Dr. Peggy Thelen

Dr. Peggy Thelen

Dr. Peggy Thelen wanted to be a teacher since she was a young girl, but she did not take a direct route to the classroom. As an undergraduate, the assistant professor of education earned a degree in business administration. After working in the business field for many years, she went back to college, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Thelen also earned a Master of Arts degree in elementary administration. After substitute teaching in elementary and middle school classrooms, and teaching preschool for many years, Thelen earned a doctorate from Michigan State University in family and child ecology.
