with Leslie Branch-Raymer and Scot J. Keith.  "From Indiana to Georgia: Evidence of Significant Pre-Maize Gardening in the Lower Southeast."  Society for American Archaeology.  Memphis, TN.  29 April 2012.

More Details:

Peoples of the Midwest and Midsouth cultivated a suite of native plants as by the Late Archaic Period. By the
Middle Woodland Period indigenous gardens were well integrated
into subsistence systems. Until recently, no evidence of substantial gardening existed for the lower
Southeast. We submit that a growing body of evidence documents significant Woodland Period pre-maize cultivation throughout an area that today encompasses Northwest Georgia and Southeastern Indiana. Moreover,
reliance on indigenous crops within a late Woodland context unexpectedly persists in the Whitewater River
valley which is geographically and temporally located within the Ohio River Valley Fort Ancient settlement-subsistence
system.

Alma College’s nationally recognized Model United Nations program has won top honors for 16 consecutive years (1997–2012) — the longest active winning streak of any college or university in the nation. Alma College’s all-time 30 “outstanding delegation” awards are the most of any college or university in the 90-year history of the conference.

Graduate Profile

Austin Mitchell

Austin Mitchell
Graduation: 2007
Major: Elementary Education

Having long admired his mother’s work as an elementary teacher, it’s no wonder Austin Mitchell ’07 followed in her footsteps.

The fourth-grade math teacher recently was selected as one of 1,100 teachers across the nation to receive surprise donations of school supplies from Office Max and Food Lion Grocery Stores.

Nominated by the principal of his Virginia elementary school for “going beyond the call of duty,” Mitchell says the education faculty members at Alma College, including Peggy Thelen, Janet Navarro and Mark Seals, are a big part of the teacher he is today.
