Introduction to Digital Media.  NMS 101.

More Details:

“New” media, a term often substituted for digital media (and likewise packed with ambiguity and fuzzy boundaries), essentially describes methods and social practices of communication, representation, and creative expression that leverages the power of computers, mobile devices, global networks, and sophisticated GUIs in an increasingly interactive and “connected” world. The course will explore both the uses of these technologies and the critical viewpoints expressed by historians, artists, cultural observers, technologists, scientists and futurists.

Alma College’s first-year students can choose to “go green” through the Get Out Bike Program, designed to reduce their carbon impact. By signing a pledge not to bring a car to campus, participants in the program receive a bike to keep at a discounted rate. Downtown businesses are easily accessible to student cyclists. Campus also is bordered by the 41-mile Fred Meijer Heartland Trail.

Prof. Carrie Parks-Kirby

Prof. Carrie Parks-Kirby
Departments: Art and Design

The work of Carrie Parks-Kirby, professor of art and design, reflects an ongoing interest in historical, architectural, and ceramic forms while exploring contemporary themes through personal, often autobiographical, imagery.

“I have felt deeply the influence of figures made for the tombs of ancient Chinese and Japanese nobles: Haniwa courtiers and farmers, Han dwellings and processions, T’ang horses and Q’uin soldiers,” she said. “The eloquent gestures and facial expressions of Mayan and Olmec figures and the serene dignity of Etruscan terra cotta couples never fail to move me.”
