Jessica Paige Gauthier, the author of this work, is both a Currie Scholar and an Earhard Scholar, working under my supervision. She has presented this work at both the 2011 Michigan Academy of Arts and Sciences conference and at the 2011 Alma College Honors Day, where she was awarded the Kapp Prize for scholarship in the Humanities.

 

Alma College’s membership in Phi Beta Kappa is an indication of excellence within the liberal arts. Only 10 percent of colleges and universities in the United States share this distinction. The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.

When philosophy professor Nicholas Dixon came to America from England to study philosophy in graduate school, he hoped to hitchhike across the country. But, unexpectedly, his love for philosophy caused him to make Michigan his home for more than 25 years.
