Health Promotion.  IPH 331.

More Details:

I have developed this course that has as its objective to teach students to plan, implement, and evaluate health promotion programs. This goal is met through problem-based learning and group project work. I continue to revise the course; the emphasis this year was to continue to use statewide health statistics from the Michigan State Health Department and to use new government-based web sites to secure national health statistics. For case-study work, students were responsible for locating the health promotion literature that corresponded to their ongoing project topics and for presenting the information to the class.

Wright Hall, Alma’s “green” residence hall, is a modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall that features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.

Dr. John Rowe
Departments: Biology

Biologist John Rowe’s laboratory resembles a turtle zoo.

Children’s wading pools converted into baby turtle habitats are arranged in rows in his darkened lab. Large curtains surround each pool, with lights, some brighter than others, directly overhead. Students maintain the lab, take measurements and analyze data pertaining to the scientific question: Does the intensity of light affect turtles and their shell coloring and growth rates?
