Academic Resources

Because your student’s success is important to Alma College, a variety of resources are in place to support students throughout their college career, including advising, mentoring and tutoring.

Upon admission, each student is matched with a faculty or staff advisor on the basis of academic, career and personal interests. Working with this advisor, students plan their courses and evaluate their progress.

For those who are uncertain about their interests, advisors assist in helping students explore and establish a career direction. Through this guidance, students learn to take on responsibility for their academic choices and careers.

While academic goals may change throughout the course of a student’s college career, advisors also may accordingly change. Departmental advising guides, information about requirements, and other helpful resources can be found at the Advising Center.

In addition to the advising and mentoring aspect of the student-advisor relationship, students also can find help through peer tutoring. The Academic and Career Planning office offers individual or group tutoring free of charge to Alma students.

In December 2011, Alma College students, faculty and staff designed and hosted a conference in Washington, D.C., on the 500th anniversary of human rights advocacy. Earlier in the year, Alma College became one of the first undergraduate colleges in the United States to belong to the International Criminal Court Student Network, joining Duke University School of Law, The University of Cambridge and other prestigious institutions in a global community that connects students who share an interest in the ICC.

Don’t take that URL at the top of the screen for granted! In 1994, alumnus Chad Jenkins had to work from scratch to create Alma College’s first official website.

“Jim Blumm and I worked together to establish it,” he says. “While it was exciting, I’ll admit our website was a bit less aesthetically pleasing than the current one.”
