What should I know about Alma College?

Alma College is an undergraduate, private liberal arts institution that highlights personalized education, social responsibility and extraordinary achievements.

What does this mean? Well, you can be confident that your son or daughter will graduate a well-rounded individual with critical thinking skills and knowledge in a variety of topics. Alma offers over 40 majors, minors, pre-professional programs and self-designed programs of emphasis, so there’s a lot of learning going on here.

Engaged learners in an Alma College classroom

Students are engaged learners at Alma.

Learning doesn’t just take place inside the classroom, however. Along with campus activities and service learning, Alma students have the opportunity to grow through opportunities like Spring Term, a short term during the month of May that allows students to delve deeply into a specific topic.

Spring Term is just one of the many highlights of the Alma experience. We have an “encyclopedia” full of other highlights and terms that you may hear your student talking about, and we encourage you to check it out. For more information, you also can review our policies and handbooks.

More than one-third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premier performing arts facility.

Maybe it’s seeing your name on the cast list. What about the butterflies in your stomach as the curtain goes up? For Shelby Schroeder, the best part of a theatre production is when it’s over.

“I love the part after the show when you’re able to see people’s reactions to your performance, especially when you’re really able to move someone,” she says. “Knowing that you did a good job and that all your hard work really meant something are such strong feelings.”
