The Alma College Style Manual assists campus community members as they write for Alma College in multiple mediums — standard news releases, The Tartan magazine, print publications, the website, social media, internal policy and all other forms of online communication, except where specific academic disciplinary practice differs. Updates were made to conform more closely to Associated Press Style.
In recent times, social media — particularly Facebook and Twitter — have emerged as important communication tools for the college. While these style guidelines apply to all forms for writing, it is recognized that written communication in social media typically is more informal and personal. Social media writers are advised to follow these general guidelines regarding style: be concise, clear, honest, to the point and reader-centered.
For issues dealing with the use of the official college logo, seal and graphic standards, please consult the Communication and Marketing Office.
If questions arise or you would like to suggest an addition to the Style Manual, please contact the Associate Vice President for Communications at (989) 463-7327.
