Sylvia Earle

Dr. Sylvia Earle
Honors Day Speaker

Sylvia Earle is an American marine biologist, environmentalist, and diver who in 1990 became the first woman to hold the post of chief scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Her research on humpback whales and the biology of algae in the Gulf of Mexico have earned her numerous awards. In 1979 Earle broke the undersea depth record for a solo ocean dive; more recently, she led the deep-ocean engineering project known as Ocean Everest, in which she piloted a submersible to a depth of 11 km (36,000 ft). Dr. Earle’s visit is sponsored by the College’s Honors Day Committee.

The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney

Set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household and performed by an ensemble cast who play multiple roles, this story is told through a mosaic of interrelated and often overlapping scenes — some funny, some touching and some savagely satiric. The stories involve over 50 characters and different periods of time that interweave to create a feast for the eyes, the ears, the heart and the soul.

Along with this very familiar music we’ll be performing a stunning modern masterpiece, Morten Lauriden’s Lux Aeterna. Called “a classic of new American choral writing” by the London Times, this lush and dramatic music speaks directly to the heart.

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
