Summer Leadership Academy Explores Community Building
Current high school juniors who are interested in creating positive change in their communities are invited to enroll in the High School Leadership Academy at Alma College.
Academy participants work with Alma College faculty and students to explore issues and ideas that affect local, state, national and international communities. This year’s academy takes place July 7-13 and will focus on how leaders can help communities become healthy, economically vigorous and environmentally sustainable.

Applications are requested by May 24. Questions may be directed to the Alma College Center for Responsible Leadership at (989) 463-7043 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Application forms are available online.
The students will use multimedia tools to create an original documentary video that explores where their communities are today and what they might be in the near future, says Sallie Scheide, assistant director of the Center for Responsible Leadership.
Leaders explore commitment to action.
The students will gain experience in conducting field research, persuasive storytelling, digital video editing and movie making. In addition, participants will expand their leadership skills through interactive sessions in which values, integrity and commitment to action are explored.
“I had a spectacular experience,” says Elizabeth Gupton, an Alma College junior from Lapeer who attended the academy when she was a high school junior. “It was a great way to meet new people and to see how passionate other students were about the world.
“The year I attended, we were divided into teams to work on projects based on sustainability and the importance of water,” says Gupton. “The mentors allowed our creativity to shine through. The project broadened my awareness about local environmental issues.”
