Gallery Features Small College Student Artwork
The artwork of students from liberal arts colleges around Michigan are on display in the Michigan Small Colleges’ Art Exhibition hosted this year by the Flora Kirsch Beck Gallery at Alma College.
The exhibit runs from Feb. 11th to March 10th. Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
The artists exhibiting work are from Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College and Olivet College. The Michigan Small Colleges’ Art Exhibition is a juried venue for art students to show their work in a professional gallery.
“The show is wide open, features multiple mediums and represents the best of the four participating schools,” says Dan Connolly, gallery director.
This year’s juror is Karen Bonderchuk, an award-winning visual artist and professor of art at Western Michigan University. Bonderchuk, who showcased her work of ravens and crows at the Flora Kirsch Beck Gallery in February 2012, was chosen because “she brings an interesting sensitivity as a juror,” says Connolly.
In her juror’s statement, Bonderchuk states, “The responsibility of adjudicating artwork is always an equal measure of bliss and dread. The bliss is in having the opportunity to view a great divergence of artwork. The dread, of course, is in having to eliminate work from the pool.”
The show features about 80 pieces of artwork selected from 220 entries.
“I applaud every student artist for entering work in this exhibition,” says Bonderchuk. “My sincere congratulation to all of the artists whose works are part of this exhibition.”
An awards and gallery reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10.
