The program includes music by Wayne Bergeron, Michael Whelen and Michel Camilo in addition to four pieces by Folds arranged for band by Ludington junior Cassandra Sherlock. The works are titled “Landed,” “Annie Waits,” “Army” and “Brick.”

“We are very appreciative to Ben Folds for giving us permission to write and perform these arrangements,” says David Zerbe, director of bands at Alma College. “The concert is very fast paced and uses a lot of theatric lighting. The students will dress in costume for portions of the performance.”

The program also includes features by the band’s color guard and Alma College pipers and highland dancers.

Frank Knox’s accomplishments are extraordinary: From fighting alongside Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders and publishing the Chicago Daily News vice presidential candidate in 1936 to Secretary of the Navy under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Through it all, the 1912 graduate stayed true to his Alma College roots. His portrait adorns the conference room in the Reid-Knox Administration Building.

Learning another language is valuable in itself, but experiences abroad can bring words and meanings to life. Alma College alumna Kelly O’Connor Dachtler was drawn to studying German because of her experiences studying aboard.

“I was able to study for a semester in Germany as part of my double major,” she says. “In addition to developing my language skills in a tremendous way, the cultural immersion opened my eyes to the world.”
