Jazz Ensemble Performs Calypso, Samba, Other Styles
The Alma College Jazz Ensemble will perform calypso, samba, funk and other jazz styles at its annual fall concert.
The performance begins at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 in the Remick Heritage Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors 62 and up, and free for Alma College staff, students and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information.
“Our fall concert will feature our Little Big Band that consists of seven horns and a rhythm section,” says Carlos Melendez, director of the jazz ensemble. “We will perform a variety of styles from a wide range of jazz and rock composers, including Frank Zappa.”
The ensemble includes new additions such as Cheboygan freshman Jonathan Clark on tenor saxophone and Vicksburg freshman Andrea Ray on baritone sax, as well as more senior members, including Oxford senior Andrea Woody, Alma junior Cyrus Zerbe, Fenton senior Jay Angus and Greenville junior Jacob Schmeltzer.
The program will include “Son of Mr. Green Genes” by Zappa, “Doxy” and “St. Thomas” by Sonny Rollins, “Ana Maria” by Wayne Shorter, “Sidewinder” by Lee Morgan, “Red Clay” by Freddie Hubbard, “Spain” by Chick Corea, “Tough Talk” by The Crusaders and “What Is Hip” by Emilio del Castillo and Tower of Power.
