Faculty Artists Perform at Gala Benefit Musicale



Alma College faculty and guest artists will perform a mix of classical and popular works at the sixth annual Gala Benefit Musicale at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Remick Heritage Center.

The concert benefits music scholarships for Alma College students. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for Alma College students and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information.

“The concert showcases members of the music faculty and guests who will perform a wide variety of music styles,” says Alma Symphony Orchestra Director Murray Gross. “This is a chance to hear our faculty performers, such as flutist Tess Miller, who will perform works by Lauren Whitemen and Jean Francaix. The audience will be treated to a range of styles performed by top-notch players.”

Other performers include double bassist Melissa Straus, trombonist J. Michael Raley, pianists Casey Robards and Gross, clarinetist Wesley Warnoff, saxophonist Mathew Tracy and soprano Victoria Walker.

The Alma College softball team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 17 times in the last 19 years—a dynasty that ranks among the best in NCAA Division III athletics. The Scots boast a 735-254 overall record during head coach Denny Griffin’s 24-year tenure at Alma.

After quitting cheer in high school, Belleville senior Jaycee Nelson thought she had hung up her pom-poms for good. But when she came to Alma College, she decided to give the sport another try.

“Cheer is a lot of hard work, but it’s also very rewarding,” she says. “The team is one of my strongest support groups on campus, and we have a lot of fun together.”
