A United States senator from Michigan and a 30-year banking executive recognized for his community-focus service will receive honorary degrees during Alma College’s 2012 commencement ceremony.

 

In December 2011, Alma College students, faculty and staff designed and hosted a conference in Washington, D.C., on the 500th anniversary of human rights advocacy. Earlier in the year, Alma College became one of the first undergraduate colleges in the United States to belong to the International Criminal Court Student Network, joining Duke University School of Law, The University of Cambridge and other prestigious institutions in a global community that connects students who share an interest in the ICC.

Since graduating from Alma College in 2006, Julie Bolitho-Lee has gotten married, finished a master’s degree, earned status as a dual citizen, published poetry, adopted two dogs and a cat, and traveled to more than 15 different countries.

Yet not once has Bolitho-Lee forgotten the incredible support she received from the English faculty when she was a student at Alma.

“I have always loved English—reading and writing,” she says. “I knew it would be my major before I even went to Alma, but the faculty in the English department fed and indulged my passions in unexpected and beautiful ways.”
